My Heart

My heart is wrapped in bandages
From all the times I tried too hard for
Something that never was.
Over the years I took my heart

And locked it away because
It’s safer that way in this big world.
I am afraid to let anyone in
Because of all the pain I have felt before.

I never want to go down that road again
So this is why I do the things I do
And I say the things I say because
I am just protecting my heart

From being shredded into smaller pieces.
